FAME Presents: IP Barrister Panel
Written by Lucy Harrison
On Monday FAME hosted its first Careers event of the year; the Intellectual Property Barrister Panel! We welcomed three expert legal professionals; Andrew Sykes, a specialist intellectual property lawyer, James Samargis, an intellectual property barrister, and Amy Surkis, an intellectual property litigator. Our expert panellists answered student’s questions in an open Q&A form, allowing students to get a feel for intellectual property as a potential legal speciality and receive some much appreciated advice on navigating law school and beyond. Not only were their insights eye-opening to the ever-changing landscape of law and its relationship to technology but they were also greatly inspirational!
More specifically, there were questions about the qualities of a good lawyer, how to find your specialty, the relationship between law and technology within the legal landscape and how legal practice interacts with the emergence of accessible AI and its potential risks and and benefits within the scope of legal practice. The subjects of technology and AI are especially topical within intellectual property and the intersections of the arts and law and we are so grateful to have heard the panel’s sagacious opinions and advice on such a relevant topic.
The FAME team would like to thank our amazing panellists and the friends of FAME who attended. We had such a great time and we can’t wait to see you at one of our events next semester!
